Custom Finishes for Any Surface

Frequently Asked Questions

What Outrageous products do I need if I am painting something other than a car?

The products required for achieving an Outrageous finish remain the same irrespective of the substrate or shape of the object. The only variation in the process would be the amount of product required and substrate type (aluminium, plastic, wood, etc.) All substrates are product/process sensitive and may require specific primers (see Outrageous Substrate Preparation Guide).

How much product will I need?

See the Paint Usage Guide.

How much will it cost?

Cost will be subject to the type of effect you wish to achieve and the amount of product required. The Outrageous Paint Usage Guide will give an indication of the volume needed and our shopping basket facility will calculate the cost.

Where can I get Outrageous applied to my car/object?

From a professional perspective, the application of Outrageous product is not technically difficult but it will require a skilled and competent sprayer to apply it in the correct environment. There are some UK specialist bodyshops who apply custom finishes regularly, alternatively if there is not one known to you in your area then contact local bodyshops and enquire if they apply custom finishes and remember to ask if they have any projects as references that you can contact.

What do I need to know if I am repairing a scratch or accident damage and can I blend a repair into an existing finish?

Application is a multi-stage process, using translucent mid coat colours that essentially rely on the ground coat for effect. With this in mind it will be difficult to blend the finish successfully. Our recommendation would be to paint complete panels in an edge to edge format as required. As long as the same initial application technique is followed you should encounter no problems.

Where can I see colour swatches to look at colours and effects?

You can view colour swatches at one of our local distributors or buy them directly from us on line or from the local distributor. Contact us for information.

How accurate are the colour swatches?

The colour swatches are samples manually sprayed by hand giving a good representation of the finished effect.

NOTE: Please remember as with all types of manually applied refinish paint, slight shade variations can occur, so we would recommend spraying a test card in the first instant.

How long does it take for me to receive product once I have ordered it?

We aim ship product the same day. A full range of stock is held at our warehouse in Leicestershire.

Where can I get Material Safety Data Sheets and Technical Data Sheets from?

These are available for you to download.

I can see Flakes advertised on the web very cheap. Can I use these?

Ultimately, you can chose to use whatever effect you want, but we would not recommend using product outside the Outrageous system due to compatibility concerns.

NOTE: The Outrageous product range is blended and formulated to ensure compatibility and conformity during and after application. Any deviation from the stated process could invalidate any warranty offered.

What do the various names and terminology mean?

Refer to our Glossary of Terms and Application Guide.

I want to learn how to use Outrageous Custom Paint Finishes, do you have classes?

We occasionally run paint courses, please contact us for details.

Can I use my own clearcoat over Outrageous Basecoat Effects?

You can do what ever you want, however we do not recommend this for several very important reasons: Outrageous clearcoat is a blend of the best quality resins with special UV additives designed to protect our unique pigments from fading and also to chemically link with our base resin to form one tough chip resistant finish.

NOTE: Adhesion failure may occur if product from different manufacturers is used with an Outrageous application process and could invalidate any warranty offered.

What is the shelf life of the products?

Unopened, most products have a shelf life of a minimum of 12 months. The exception would be activators once opened.

What type of spray equipment should I use?

Most spray gun manufacturers produce perfectly adequate refinish equipment more than capable of achieving a good standard of finish. It is important to follow information detailed in the relevant Outrageous technical data sheet with particular reference to the gun nozzle set up along with your own gun manufacturers guidelines on their specific gun set up information. Our general recommendation would be to use a gun you are comfortable with.

Are there other types of finishes and colours available in addition to those on the colour swatch?

Absolutely. The Outrageous colour swatch gives only an indication of the types of finishes available. It is just the tip of the iceberg when you consider the potential colour combinations available.

Is the Outrageous Ground Coat any different to other manufacturers Ground Coats?

Ground coat formulations and resins within will vary from different manufacturers. They do perform the same obliteration duties but that is the only similarity. Outrageous groundcoat is specifically formulated for use with the Outrageous range of products and we do not recommend any other type of ground coat with the range of effects.

NOTE: Adhesion failure may occur if products from different manufacturers are used with an Outrageous application process.

Do we have to apply an intercoat clear as with other manufactures?

Yes and No. Outrageous is European paint technology. It is a wet on wet system generally speaking unless a lot of time consuming masking up is required between coats. If the paint application is completed within a 4-8 hour period you will not need an intercoat clear. When significant masking is needed (over 4-8 hours) it would be advisable to apply an intercoat clear and key before masking.

Justification for this revolves around the open time (wet on wet capability) of a solvent base coat and the limited time (4-8 hour period) available before it looses its adhesive properties.

Our recommendation would be NO to intercoat clear for standard application and small intercoat masking work and YES for large time consuming masking jobs.

Because the effects are very different from normal paint, is the painting process very tricky?

Most experienced painters will be able to apply our finishes. They are very similar in application to multi stage systems being used by vehicle manufacturers as standard.

How do apply the special effect mid coat colours?

It is important to apply an even coat all over, avoiding excessive overlapping and any potential for shade variations. Application technique is very similar to a conventional silver base coat application.

Will I be able to apply this paint this in my garage?

NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT. This is a professional product for use by professional painters. As with all solvent based paints they are covered by the EPA (environmental protection act) and COSHH regulations and require specific types of PPE (personal protective equipment) for safe use and disposal.

Is it possible to utilize the existing vehicle colour as a ground coat?

Yes, in theory it is possible to use the existing colour providing the existing colour finish is in good condition and prepared correctly. It is important to note that if any light scratches, stone chips or scuffs are present on the surface then the translucent mid coat application WILL NOT give total obliteration to these areas.

Our general recommendation would be to apply an Outrageous ground coat similar in colour to the vehicles original finish.

Is the Outrageous paint system polyester or acrylic based?

The paint is acrylic based.
